Catherine Palmer, MS, LPC, LMHC, MFT
Licensed Counselor in Oregon and Washington
My name is Catherine Palmer and I’m passionate about helping people improve their relationships with themselves and others.
I’m a fully licensed counselor throughout the states of Oregon and Washington.
I have a Masters of Science degree in Counseling from PSU, with a specialty in Marital, Couple and Family Therapy.
I have additional, long-term training in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples, Emotionally Focused Therapy for Individuals, Internal Family Systems, EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Neurobiology and the Gottman Method.
I’ve worked with hundreds of individuals and couples, helping them create healthier, more satisfying relationships with themselves and others.
It’s a profound experience to witness the ways in which people are able to overcome their struggles and empower themselves.
It brings me great satisfaction to be able to help others make permanent positive changes in their lives and in their relationships.
I grow and learn from each of my clients and have the utmost respect and admiration for their courage and commitment to heal.
A Bit of History
In 2016, I founded a couples clinic in Portland, Oregon because couples counseling is such a passion of mine.
I’ve experienced my own trials and tribulations in life, and I know the commitment and strength it takes to heal. A part of my personal journey included problems in my long-term marriage. During that time, I discovered how difficult it can be to find quality couples counseling.
When I founded the clinic, my vision was to create a community resource where people could go and know, without a doubt, that they were receiving quality care.
After operating that clinic for nearly a decade, while maintaining a small private practice, I realized that I wasn’t getting enough one-on-one time with clients (my true passion). I left the clinic in order to increase the number of people I can help in my private practice.
Before Counseling
Originally a Midwesterner, I transplanted to Oregon in 1994 to get a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Environmental Science. I then went on to get my Ph.D. in molecular biology and worked as a research scientist and adjunct professor.
I eventually discovered that, although I love science, my life was becoming consumed by my career, which wasn’t as meaningful as I wanted it to be. It was at that point that I decided to dial back on science and pursue something I felt more passionate about.
I taught Biology courses at the University level for nearly twenty years, and I’ve discovered that my knowledge of both psychology and biology provides me with unique and powerful tools as a counselor. In fact, I strongly believe in the interpersonal neurobiology concept of “inspire to rewire” the brain via a supportive and nurturing therapeutic relationship.
My Values
The things I believe most in include family/friends, animals, nature, empathy, equality, love, compassion, and kindness.
